Role Purpose:
To provide support to the Orthobiologics Laboratory in the day to day running and regulatory compliance of the cellular therapies facility and associated clinical activities; to perform technical laboratory functions in specialty areas specific to his/her competency and as determined by the Management of the Laboratory Department.
Key Accountabilities & Activities:
- Adherence and compliance with cleanroom regulations that focus on aseptic techniques in cleanroom facilities.
- Perform GMP Manipulation in Clean Rooms following accreditation standards and perform aseptic tissue processing and production of cellular therapies for clinical use, ensuring that harvested tissue is safely retrieved, processed, and destroyed according to the documented procedures.
- Comply with protocols for the culture and transplantation of different cell sources for use in the orthopaedic setting.
- Be skilled and certified in cleanroom cell therapy Lab, able to aseptically prepare tissue culture media, supplements, and reagents.
- Acquiring and analyzing specimen data by flow cytometer.
- Perform quality control procedures, verify, document, and validate the accuracy of the laboratory data to assess the reproducibility and validity of current laboratory methods.
- Monitor Key Performance Indicators for cleanroom facility.
- Participate in the routine maintenance of the clean room environment and ancillary facilities, including equipment checks and calibration, environmental monitoring and cleaning as directed in SOPs.
- To have, to acquire and to develop specialist skills to recognize anomalies and ensure these are communicated / documented properly and be able to undertake investigation and remedial action, if directed to do so.
- Maintain strict confidentiality and proper storage and back-up of patient records and test results.
- Assist in the development of research protocols and procedures.
- Assists with evaluation and implementation of relevant new laboratory services.
- Participate in quality improvement and quality surveillance activities within Aspetar, including audits and inspections.
- Interact with other staff to solve problems and interpret patients’ laboratory results within the framework of the Orthobiological Laboratory.
- Review and maintain internal and external laboratory safety programmes, including safe handling and proper disposal of specimens and other laboratory materials, and implementing of corrective actions, when necessary, in compliance with statutory requirements.
- Assist in environmental monitoring procedures (measure, monitor and accurately record), using agreed quality control procedures, other duties related to QA.
- Monthly review of building management system documents for Liquid Nitrogen levels and temperatures in cryogenic tanks.
- Ensure the health, safety and welfare of fellow employees, visitors and contractors, so far as is reasonably practicable.
- Participate in Laboratory as well as Hospital Training and Education Programs.
- Provide appropriate training to other employees, as required.
- Process human samples using validated protocols and techniques with a high degree of competency.
- Record and maintain complete documentation throughout all phases of laboratory testing according to Laboratory and/or Hospital requirements.
- Record and maintain effective inventory control to ensure uninterrupted workflow.
- Record applicable patient data/results in Laboratory Information System.
- Inform the Laboratory Director in case of any procedural discrepancies for appropriate action.
- Participate in preparing the laboratory for accreditation by national and international bodies.
- Comply with national and international accreditation requirements.
- Comply with policies set down by the Qatar Ministry of Public Health and the Aspetar Hospital.
- Ensure compliance with relevant accreditation standards, laboratory safety regulations and quality control / quality assurance programs.
- Demonstrate a commitment to providing a quality service.
- Comply with employee obligations regarding Occupational Health and Safety, Infection Prevention and Control and Quality Improvement as set down in Aspetar Hospital’s Policy and Procedure Manual.
- Maintain confidentiality in relation to discussions, disclosure of records, and information concerning the Aspetar.
- Maintain a discrimination and harassment free workplace.
- Comply with responsibilities listed under the Aspetar’s Code of Conduct.
- Assume any other responsibilities as directed by the direct supervisor.
Necessary knowledge and Experience to be able to do the job:
- Minimum experience of 5-7 years in which 2-3 years should be in a similar position / responsibility, preferably in a similar Industry.
- Must be well experienced and have sufficient knowledge of Orthobiological laboratory methods and techniques relevant to his/her specific job description.
- Must have specialized knowledge and experience related to handling / processing aseptic tissues, i.e. Stem cell culture, sub culturing, cell count, cell viability assay, cell maintenance & cell freezing.
Skills and Abilities:
- Excellent hand and eye co-ordination required, i.e. able to manipulate aseptic materials within isolators / laminar flow cabinets;
- Able to work in a restricted position for a substantial proportion of the working time.
- Meticulous and pays attention to detail.
- Ability to work shifts and demonstrable willingness to be placed on a 24-hour on-call roster, if required.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills.
- Good understanding of sciences and fundamental scientific principles related to orthobiological processes and analysis.
- Ability to work well as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
- Ability to work independently with initiative and to be adaptive to changes.
- Ability to multi-task and to work with frequent interruptions.
- Ability to work well under pressure.
- Previous experience working in the Middle East or within another culture or remote settings is preferable.
Education and Certification requirements:
- Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science/Technology or any other related filed.
- Fulfil all licensing requirements if required. Relevant Medical Licensure.
